About Balighattam – Brahmalingeswara Temple Visakhapatnam

About 3kms South West of Narsipatnam there lies on the Bank of Varaha river a place known as Balighattam. This place owes its importance to the Brahma Lingeshwara Temple at the foot of a small hill on the Western bank of the river. It is fascinating to notice that this temple is meant to have been engineered by Brahma which the stream is said to have been created by Hindu deity throughout as a board (Varaha). Therefore, the river is known as Varahanadi. The deposits of white clay on the river bank are supposed to be the ashes of a sacrifice performed hereby Bali, the demon king from whom the village takes its name as Balighattam.

The watercourse at this place flows from North to South for a brief distance. On account of those peculiarities, the place is taken into account to be terribly sacred. The sivaratri festival celebrated here every year attracts a large number of devotees. Balighattam village is famous for two things

1. On the hill is a small ashram of famous saint known as Sri Chidgadanda Swamy (for details regarding this saint, one may refer to book namely “ANDHRA YOGULU” written Sri Rama Raju garu, a famous writer and authority on history of several saints from Andhra Pradesh.

2. There is a temple dedicated to goddess Lakshmi, developed by one saint named Sri Padmavathi Ammavari. She resides there. One should cross the river and reach the foot of the hill to reach the temple.  It is worth visiting.

3. There is a famous Brahmalinga swamy (Siva) Temple Doing festivals at the time of Karthika masam (month) owl the month and Maha sivaratri, Once upon a time This temple was built in Devathas as for grandfathers stores.
